Training - schnauzer caged all day

by John Khaw
(Malaysia)

1. I just got a Miniature Schnauzer just a couple of days ago. She is 2 months old. Most of the days I go to work from morning till evening. So, initially I just put her in the cage that that period of time. I only take her our in the evening.
Basically she is caged most of the time. Even on weekends when I don't work. Reason being so is that I want to train her to be independent and getting used to my routine.
Am I doing it right? Secondly, what other training I should start with her? She is quite playful at the moment.

Training.. Puppy ..Caged All Day
by: Michele

Ok that's fine and it's good that you have a friend to let her out and play with her at midday.. a routine is of the utmost and if she's OK, which she is .. Great.. but some people do not have friends like you and believe to crate all day is fine... not realising that puppies need to relieve themselves every so often..I also have crate trained and my boys sleep in their crate all night now with the door open of course.. it's security and comfort for them.. in the car they are harnessed safely with a Car Doggy Harness..

Lilah is doing fine!!
by: Rhonda

I don't think it is cruel to crate train a puppy. I just got my mini schnauzer a week ago and I put it in a crate when I leave for the day. I have a friend come over to let her out mid day. She seems to be doing fine. She is 10 weeks and happy, happy, happy!! I feel this will make her develop a routine.

Training.. Puppy ..Caged All Day
by: Michele

When I had my puppies, if I had to be out for a while I used a "Baby Gate" and sectioned off part of my room, left the radio on and plenty of newspaper.. in case of little puddles. But I ALWAYS gave cuddles before I went out and more so when I returned, so they knew that there was lots of love for them to look forward to.... I left them together with lots of sensible toys.. and never had a problem.. but I did leave water for them to drink... which is a must..

OK, but......
by: Dada of Giant Pup known as Prince, HA

I agree with most of the first comment BUT, out is what out of now, lets give some constructive advice to help the little pup and owner in a bad situation. I was raised with 3 minitures, had a wonderful Husky house dog for 11 years after losing her I just emotionally and time wise couldn't do out again. After 12 petless years I just got a Giant for the wife, haha. So I'm no expert but I am good with dogs.
My first suggestion; get your pet out of the crate every moment your at home; this means effective quick potty training.
2nd Buy and Read and do " 100 words to teach your dog"
It's a training book based on respect training.
3. Since we know you are going to create ask day no matter what's here, you owe dynasty pup a before and after work walk, rain shine or snow so get an umbrella.
4 Pet stores have cage pieces you can build dog runs with about 20 inches high, spend the money and build one through 2 rooms so when potty trained he doesnt have to stay in a crate all day.
5 a crate hamster type water bottle works well during the day, after house broken.

2 month old puppy CAGED ALL DAY
by: Michele

This is not fair at the tender age of 2 months.. you are asking for trouble, later, and you should not have had a puppy if you are at work all day.. Puppies need COMPANY and at Least 3 to 4 Balanced Meals a Day... they need to interact with people and socialise... isn't there Puppy Day Care Centre in your country.. ? To buy a puppy at 2 months old is, again, not sensible .. as reputable breeders do not normally let their pups go before the age of 10 to 12 weeks.. and also did the breeder know that your pup would be alone ALL DAY... I personally think you were being, and are being cruel.. would you like to be CAGED UP ALL DAY and where does your puppy do its toilet.. ???
