teeth cleaning

I was shocked when a friend said she left her 8 yr.old toy schnauzer at the vet for a teeth cleaning. When she picked her up, she discovered the vet wasn't even there - a technician did the teeth cleaning and said '10' teeth came out with the cleaning!! My friend was so upset and I don't blame her. Is this usual? I've had dogs my whole life (and they've had cleanings) but never lost any teeth - especially 10!?
