Scratching Ears and Tail area
by: Faye

FYI
I too have a 3yr old mini schnauzer that has the same problem. Scratching his ear and biting his tail area. My vet said it was an allergy and I should bring Pepper in for a steroid shop(NOT!)I ask him what was an alternative, he said to give him Claritin for a week. It gave him some relief but not much. So I called the vet back, he said to give him 500 mg of Omega 3 Fish Oil Gel tabs daily, which should help. He said schnauzers are known to suffer from dry skin and that is what was causing him to itch with the allergy . I started the Fish oil yesterday hopefully this will give my Pepper some relief.

Does anyone else give their mini schnauzer Fish Oil?

NOTE FROM LINDA AND MAX:
Yes, every day and have done for years. If the allergies get worse, ask for APOQUEL from your vet, hard to get hold of at the mo but non-steroidal and highly effective

allergies
by: Linda and Max

It sounds like your vet doesn't know what he or she is talking about as it sounds like your Schnauzer has typical seasonal allergies, caused by pollen or similar, like many Schnauzers - including Max.
Get her put on some antihistamines to start with, as these are cheap and generally work well. you'll find she won't need them in the fall and winter.
