Suddenly a hard time standing and walking

My 13 year old little fella is having a hard time standing and moving around. Once he's up and about it seems to be better but if it lays down for any period of time he won't want to get up and limbs heavily (on his back lags). I pick him up and bring him to the backyard in the morning and he immediately lays back down. Eventually he will get up and walk around. I'm guessing its athritis but it came on suddenly if that's the case. Does it work that way?
