Scratching schnauzer - any advice?

by Wendy Worby
(UK)

We are about to take on a 3yr old miniature schnauzer. However, she is scratching her bottom and biting her tail fairly frequently. She appears to be quite pink around her underneath. I also notice her scratching her ears. Can ear mites live around the bottom area too?

Visit a vet. :)

Have a vet check up for a new pet. They'll check for flee's, ear mites and anything else just to make sure they are healthy. If they are having "bottom" issues they may need to have their anal glands checked (some schnauzers have issues with these.) And you can discuss a heart worm prevenative. Whenever I've adopted a pet, we always stop at the vet's before going home to make sure everything is OK. Hope your little dog is better quick.

Fleas!

That is an obvious thing to check.....its not fleas......Ive since found out that its her anal glands. Ive had them cleared and this has stopped the biting and scratching.......so Ive learned something even though Ive had schnauzers now for 14 years.
