Schnauzers with Small Animals

My family and I are getting our first dog, and we are are thinking of adopting a Schnauzer (My sister and dad are allergic to dogs).
We also have a dwarf hamster and two parakeets. I've read on many websites that Schnauzers are not very compatible with small animals. Is this true? And, what can we do to make sure we don't cause commotion between the small animals and our Schnauzer?
