What does it mean when my 9yr old schnauzer growls and tries to bite?

You don't give any details of when he does this. If it is when he is on a lead it is often a fear response as they know they can't run away.
If it is when the dog is off the lead, it needs sorting. Has your dog suddenly started doing this. Has the dog had a recent bad experience or has he or she just got grumpy with old age?
Make sure the dog is not in pain and if not, it has to be behavioural so you should start going back to training and socialisation.
