Running away

We have a mini schnauzer and 1/4 acre back yard, why does he run away? He comes back but we always worry that he'll get hit by a car or skunk! He has so much space but still he runs, WHY?

THEY LOVE TO HUNT! I WOULD FENCE A SMALL AREA FOR HIM SO HE WILL BE SAFE!

Firstly.. has he been castrated..? maybe he fancies a little bitch nearby who is in season !! you must train him not to run away otherwise he will get hurt... treats usually work or a very sharp command.. WAIT.. or a dog whistle..
When schnauzers are having fun they pretend to be deaf !!
