Poop at night

So my pup is almost 5 months. She has been both potty trained and crate trained. She started pooping in her crate at night. She sleeps in her crate in the room with me. Every night for a week now she has pooped in her crate. I put her in the bathroom over night most recently because cleaning her and the crate and everything else each morning before work was far too much to be doing. So her 1st night in the bathroom she peed and pooped all over the bathroom, although there were peepads down and she knows that if she needs to go and can’t go outside to use the peepad. She totally didn’t not use them. This has only been a week, but is very frustrating. Even at 8 weeks she would wake me to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, but has not done so this week.... Update (week 2) she has a new crate and sleeps on the livingroom, which allows her to see into my bedroom. For the last week I have been waking at 4:30 am and putting her in the bathroom, where she now pees and poops on the peepad, because if I don't she will use the bathroom in her bed. However the issue is getting her to sleep through the night again. I've tired a number of things. Currently I am feeding her once a day during the day. She goes around 1pm and poops and will usually poop again around 8/9pm. Bedtime is at 10. However she is still waking up to poop in the wee hours of the morning. She has been to the vet and her health is good. What can I do?

Max the pooper
by: Max, Mike, Molly

We had the same problem with our Max when he was little (about the same age as your dog). I think the initial problem is that Max came from a pet store and had been pooping and peeing in the cage he was in and was just used to that. We got him about 12 weeks old, and it took a VERY long time to get him house trained. I had to give him a bath almost every day for the longest time because no matter how much I took him out during the night he would still inevitably poop all over himself. I set my alarm for every HOUR, then every 1 1/2 hrs, then 2 hours....basically over a period of weeks and momths I extended the time he would be in his kennel over night until he learned to hold it through the night. If I set my alarm for every 3 hours and he pooped or peed during that time, I had to cut it back to 2 1/2 hours until he was good with that again. It takes a lot of love and patience.....but he is now holding it all night and had been house trained for a very long time. Best dog ever. Just keep trying, you'll get there!
NOTE FROM LINDA AND MAX:Thank you for sharing that and good for you that you spent so much time sorting your little fellow out. Well done!

pooping
by: Linda and Max

You are doing all the right things.
If the vet says she is healthy, then you have to look at whether it is behavioural or whether it is the food you are feeding her.
I would try her on a high quality food, such as Arden Grange, o similar, as she seems to be doing a lot of pooping and the food may not suite her - but change it gradually over a week.
Also, when you get up, I would put her in the garden or yard (If you have one) rather than the bathroom.
Then ignore her until it is time for you to get up.
Let us know how you get on, and good luck
