Old Age

My Schnauzer is 16, she cannot see very well and walks slowly. She only gets up to go outside and at night, when she is ready to go to bed, she walks in circle around the livingroom. She eats good, but drinks lots of water and now I have to pick up the other dogs bowl or she will eat his too, which is out of character for her. She cannot hear very well either. She was the runt of the litter, yet she has outlived all of her siblings, mother, father, and all of her puppies too. She has been treated like a baby since day one. I believe she has arthritis now and I am worried one day I am gonna be at work and she is going to pass. Any suggestions?

Bless your little pup for being so strong. I hope mine lives as long as yours has. I don't have any advice on her health so I'm sorry, all I can say is cherish your moments, keep a close eye, and take lots of cute pictures of her to look at and enjoy in the future. Good luck to you and your pup.

Yes indeed she has done incredibly well and my beautiful black boy Ringo was 15 when he passed away, at home and I was with him.. he wasn't blind nor had he arthritis, but he became very slow and I used to take him out in a Doggy Stroller so he could walk when he wanted and be pushed when he got tired.. She will tell you when it's time, in the meantime enjoy the time you have left with her.. As she is drinking a lot.. take her to you vet for a check up to see if her kidneys are Ok and also that the level of protein isn't too much for her..

Your lovely mini has done incredibly well to live to 16 - you must have lavished her with a lot of love and care.
Sorry we have no advice for you, other than to keep a close eye on her. As long as she is comfortable, you have no need to worry, If she shows signs of deteriorating, take her to your vet.
If you are at work when she passes away, it will have been quick and peaceful, in some ways a blessing if she passes in her sleep one day.
Our kind wishes,
Linda and Max
