Mini Schnauzers and baby

by Gentry

I have 3 female mini schnauzers. The momma who is 10 yrs old, and two of her daughters who are 4. The momma grew up playing with my oldest son and absolutely loved kids as a pup. In her old age I've seen her nip at a few kids who have come to the house. My baby boy is 8 months old and starting to crawl. He is obsessed with the dogs. Is my momma dog able to know the difference in him vs.other peoples kids. She's protective and watchful and I just wonder if she knows my son is ours and won't bite him.

Schnauzer and baby

We rehomed our schnauzer when he was 4. When he was one year old his owner had a baby and poor Charlie's problems started as they did not get on. After at least one failed rehoming we took him on and I almost failed with him. Good with other dogs, problems with people especially children. He is now nearly 9 and with great help from Dogs Trust he almost normal although I still have to careful as very occasionally he takes a dislike to people.

Momma and baby

Hi there,
Schnauzers can change character as they get older. Like us, they can become more irritable, less patient, less tolerant.
Your older Mini may be jealous of your new arrival. While she probably realises that the baby is part of the family, this may not stop her from nipping, due to jealousy or the baby accidentally hurting the dog.
Sorry to say, I would NOT leave your baby unattended with the dog -or dogs, and just keep an eye on them when you are there. Make sure your older Mini gets attention as well as the baby to try and stop her getting jealous.
