Is my Schnauzer too fat or too thin?

by Mama Nan

My mini schnauzer weighed 29 lbs when we rescued her. She had just had puppies which accounted for some of it, however, she seemed to stay at that weight and constantly had UTI's.
The vet said she needed to lose some weight. She has lost 9 lbs in a year and now we think she looks too thin. She has that definite curve behind her rib cage. My husband thinks her body should be straight instead of having that curve. What is my schnauzer's body supposed to look like?
She's healthy, her blood work was good. She hasn't had any UTI's in a year. She's active and happy. She is not on processed dog food. I feed her unseasoned, human grade food (lean meats, veggies, fruits, dairy). This is how I got her weight off.
Maybe I need to increase the amount of food she is getting. She gets about 1 1/2 cups 2X a day.

Anxious to hear from you.

Yes I agree.. your Schnauzer is at the right weight and definitely not too thin.. she should have a curve as this shows she has a waist.. as long as you cannot see the bones of her ribcage .. she is fine.. don't worry..food is good too. my Rebel and Rambo love broccoli, carrots, cabbage.. and brown rice.. They both love apricots, satsumas and apples and bananas.. never give her grapes, sultanas nor tomatoes, as these are poisonous to dogs..

Just right :-)

Your schnauzer is a good weight now. She should have a waistline behind the ribcage; not be straight.

1/2 cup to 1 cup of food twice a day is plenty.
