Homemade Dog Food Ideas?

by Kathy
(South Carolina)

Hi everyone! My soon-to-be 10 year old mini has been having some health issues lately, so my vet and I have decided to try the route of homemade dog food. He is being treated for debilitating tremors in his arms and legs, and is on quite a few medications. Apparently, humans with tremors have shown improvement by going gluten-free, so we are going to try it for my pup. What vegetable or snack does your schnauzer love to eat? I want to give him some variety in his meals. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

NOTE FROM LINDA AND MAX:
Try him on gentle foods like chicken and rice - change his diet slowly over a week-10 days, as dogs cannot change food quickly like we can. A lot of dogs like carrots and apples, and other veg -avoid anything with lots of onions in, these are poisonous to dogs.

Diet & Skin Problems
by: Phil Medway

Schnauzers tend to react badly to the preservatives in dried foods and cans particularly in hot climates. Can lead to skin problems and various other issues. We have always fed ours on a diet of brown rice with lightly booked chicken or lightly cooked beef including the broth with vegetables added. They love cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage to the extent they will eat these first. Only thing they do not like is bananas. One word of warning if you are giving them vegetables from your own meal don't be tempted to add gravy as it has a high salt level. I hope recovery is just around the corner!

Great Dog Food
by: Kay

My Mini Schnauzer eats Orijen kibble and Primal raw nuggets, which are frozen. She gets no grains at all and never has. She is 2 1/2 and does great. We give her a few treats that also are grain free. We buy all of her food at Louie's Pet Beastro in Auburn, Michigan, USA. Mary Jo is very knowledgeable about the foods she carries, where they are made, where the ingredients come from. No China stuff!!! All ingredients must come from USA or Canada. She is definitely gluten free!

Homemade food
by: Michele

Linda is right and chicken and rice is great .. my boys love broccoli, but not every day, they also have carrots, mashed up and mixed in with their food..and also cabbage..
I feed my boys Nature-Diet.. and this is Gluten-Free.. their Website is www.naturediet.net there are different varieties… details are as follows..:- May be fed warm… Chemical Free… Highly Digestible… Minimal Processing.. 100% Gluten Free..
I've never had any problems with their digestive system and all my dogs in the past and now were and are on it and always have been, and will be.. By the way don't ever give your dog Tomatoes nor Grapes.. sultanas and raisins too.. as these are also poisonous as is human chocolate..
