Giant Schnoodle - HELP - any Schnauzer tricks?!

by Jack
(Millersville, MD)

I'm owned by a magnificent Giant Schnoodle, "Rocky," who is remarkably intelligent, social, appropriately vigilant, and well-tempered.
My only gripes are that he compulsively itches and licks (grooms) himself. I've tried every quality canine shampoo imaginable to help bring relief without success, as recommended by my vet and groomer, and various consultants at pet stores.
And, within one day of thoroughly washing his beard and moustache with the same shampoos, the combination of saliva, water, and food create a foul smell that permeates the house. Although he doesn't shed and is the best dog I've ever had, I get stressed seeing him uncomfortable and my lady-friend can't stand his smell.
Any Schnauzer/Poodle tricks, remedies, or ideas on how I can provide him and myself relief? Many thanks!

Keep us posted

Hi Jack,
Sounds like it was probably food-related, as suggested by a couple of our readers. Glad that you are getting sorted.
Keep us informed of how you get on - perhaps you could also upload a photo of your Schnoodle on our Your Pictures section?
Good luck,
Linda and Max

Dietary Change in Progress--Thanks!
by: Anonymous

Thanks everyone! I am in the process, on your and my vet's collective advice, of converting him from Chicken Soup to Call of the Wild Roasted Lamb. If that doesn't work, then I'll switch him to Call of the Wild Salmon. My vet said the top 3 allergins to canines are in this order: beef, chicken, and grain. I'm at 50/50 and Rocky gobbles it up vs. his indifferent attitude toward the Chicken Soup. He'll go nuts when we're 100% next week! I'll keep you posted and perhaps we'll all learn something new...?

Yes, try a new diet
by: Betsy, alpharetta, ga

I agree with the last poster. Our MS had itching problems and which shampoos, etc didn't help.

After experimenting, we discovered she is allergic to corn and chicken.

We tried the NB sweet potato and fish which really helped with the scratching. But, since she did not
seem to like this brand, switched her to Wellness Healthy 5 with whitefish. Also, add fish oil to her diet.

I wash our dog's beard a few times a day.

Giant Schnoodle
by: Ann G

The problem may be a food allergy. My mini-schnauzer Charlie was constantly scratching and biting hs back. A vet freind of mine suggested changing his food and treats to grain-free. We now have him on Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish dog food and treats. His skin is clear again and he no longer scratches.

Good luck!
