Female Schnauzer on Heat - need some advice please

by Lauren R.g.
(Spfld,MA)

I have a 6 month old female Schnauzer & this morning I woke up & found a blood trail & linked it back to my her. Its the first time she has been on heat & she is my my first puppy.
Im confused & need some answers. So my question is:
How long does a 6 month old Schnauzer get her period for?
If I get her spayed is it going to stop her from coming on to heat any more?

on heat
by: Linda

Dear Suzanne,
Your girl is not in pain when she is on heat, but her hormones are raging and she is not used to it.
She may require more attention from you, make sure she also has water to drink and do not let her out of your sight - being on heat is the only time female dogs can get pregnant and the males can scent her from up to two miles away!
You can play more games at home to make up for any lack of exercise and take her mind off her heat cycle.
She is fine, don't worry.
Linda

That’s all common sense… But what about…
by: S. Lancaster

When your puppy goes into heat the first time, how do we comfort her? Is she in any pain?
My puppy seems very agitated and won’t eat much at all!
She is just whining~
I finally got her down and relaxing but tomorrow is another day.
How do we comfort our fur babies?
Thanks ahead of time~ regards,
Suzanne L, Auburn, Wa.

Need Advice please!!! Does my girl need a C section?
by: Nervous Nelly schnauzer mom

I am an experienced schnauzer mom of 3, currently. I’ve had 5 total through the years. They have all been spayed up till now. Long story short, my 20 pound boy mated with my 13 pound girl. We have been very diligent watching her and keeping the boys away. We foolishly thought she was done and over with her heat after two weeks, as she has only lasted 2 weeks in past heats. She is 1 and 1/2 years old. My concern is her being able to birth a possible larger pup. I’ve never went through the birthing experience. She is currently 6 and a half weeks along. I called my vet and they said they don’t take X-rays until two weeks before birth. Should I be worried/ concerned or just let nature take its course?

bleeding in between heat cycles
by: Anonymous

Hi, I'm concerned about my Giant Schnauzer, pepper and salt, bleeding in between heat cycles and blood urine, she is almost 2 years old and has her first heat at 6 mos, 2nd at 12mos. I noticed that in between each cycle she bleeds, she is a very healthy dog, no medical issues says my vet. I bought her from a good breeder. So my question is,

This happen like humans that don't have a normal cycle? I'm at home every day with my dogs, so I know for sure how she exercise, eat, play, etc. Please, any comment would be very appreciated.

Heat?
by: Mia

My almost 10 month old teacup Schnauzer had quite amount of blood mixed with her first urine of the day. Ran her to the vet who did a urinalysis. All normal. Hold this be her first heat? Acting totally normal, eating and playing. Her little lady part was quite puffy about 3 weeks ago. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thank you.

Can my Min. come into heat months after her previous one?
by: Anonymous

Hi My Min. Schn. was in heat in December. Her vulva is swollen now and she is continually licking herself.
There are currently no other symptoms. That would mean it's been 4 months since her last heat.
Is this likely or should I have her vetted to be sure it's not a vaginitis? Do they get vaginitis?
Thanks so much!

My Sweet Lola
by: Anonymous

I'm not sure if this is the right place or not but I need a little reassurance.
My toy/miniature female schnauzer will be a year old the end of the month and she still hasn't had her first heat cycle.
Her genitals have been swollen and she is cleaning herself a lot. There hasn't been any bleeding. Is this normal? What should I expect next?

NOTE FROM LINDA:
It sounds like she is having her heat and is very light. Not all females produce lots of blood. She is licking herself clean. Yes, it is normal.

Toy schnauzer in heat
by: Anonymous

My young schnauzer(6 months) has just gone into heat my older schnauzer (14 months) is fixed but will he still mount her? She is very small (5 pounds) he is about (20 pounds). I'm worried he will hurt her. Please let me know.

NOTE FROM LINDA: Although he has been neutered, he may still have an interest, he will be able to smell her. If he has been neutered, he won't be able to produce puppies, but he may try to mount her.
Given how tiny she is, you need to be careful with her, so keep an eye on them at all times, so she doesn't get hurt.
Given how small she is, I would not recommend getting her spayed until she has reached maturity -at about 2 years old.

standard Schnauzer is in heat
by: Anonymous

My breeder said to let her go through one heat. 3 months after heat you can spay her. If you spay too soon it can affect their growth or make them incontinent. So I’m following my breeder's advice. I have an 8 foot fence. It is vinyl, so no dog can climb it. I let my female Husky go out with her in the yard. So protects my puppy.

What
by: Hewo

My schnauzer is 6 months old and is in heat for the first time we are not planning on fixing her, we are training her to be a show dog. So what should I do to help her from bleeding everywhere?

NOTE FROM LINDA: You could try a doggy diaper -you can buy them online or in pet shops.

It can be messy
by: Anonymous

My little female mini schnauzer came into heat at 7 months. She's about halfway through the cycle. I've found that size small swim diapers (I had some mediums left over from when my grandson was a baby) are cheaper than dog diapers and stay on better! She's about 10 pounds so the small works for her---just figure out where to cut a hole for the tail to hold it on.

I think my dog is in heat
by: Anonymous

My dog is swelling and red do that mean she in heat

NOTE FROM LINDA AND MAX:
Probably. If so, make sure she doesn't go off on her own, she is a magnet for male dogs.

Note from Linda and Max. It can be quite a long time, especially if the male gets stuck inside the female

Facts about Female Schnauzers on Heat
by: Linda and Max

The average female schnauzer has her first menstrual cycle (called being "on heat") cycle about six months of age. A few dogs start earlier and few dogs later, even as late as 14-months.

If you have a new female puppy, you should watch her and note when she has her first cycle. If she's 14-months old and still hasn't't been in heat, you should take her to a veterinarian.

The average heat lasts three weeks. In some dogs, it lasts only two weeks while others go four weeks.

Most female schnauzers have regular cycles usually every six to eight months. It's quite typical to be "in heat" twice a year.

Your schnauzer can get pregnant ONLY when in heat. If you want to breed from your bitch, the most fertile days are 11-15 of her cycle.

Please note: when she's in heat, she will usually permit any male dog to mount her! (Few females, will accept a male when they're not in heat.)

She can get pregnant in her first cycle.
However, responsible breeders generally would not breed a dog that early.

Walk your schnauzer with care when she is on heat. She has no problem with the exercise, but she's a walking magnet for male dogs!

Even the best trained and behaved female dog will succumb to hormones! You can't trust her off a leash or out of your control. Never let her outside by herself even in a fenced yard if there is any possibility of male dogs nearby.

Regarding having your female schnauzer spayed, people used to be told to let her go through at least one heat cycle or let them have one litter.

Now many veterinarians are spaying much younger -speak to your local vet.

Once your dog has been spayed, she will no longer come on to heat and can no longer have puppies.

Hope this is helpful,
Linda and Max
