Fearful of noises

by Betty
(Moore, OK)

Our 4 year old miniature schnauzer went through the 2013 Moore, Ok tornado with our 19 year old daughter. They road out the storm in a hall closet. Daughter says they felt the floor vibrating and could hear the wind and debris hitting the house. House and family fine, no damage just debris. The tornado was within 6 blocks. Since then ANY loud noise, even me cooking and moving pots and pans around, now especially thunder or fireworks will send her running to hide in my closet under my low hanging clothes. She was just recently getting better then the fireworks started. Any ideas to comfort her and help her fears?

Max is the same
by: Linda

Max is just the same with loud noises and has got worse as he has got older - loud tractors, fireworks, bangs, etc.
In fact last night we had thunder and lightning and he jumped on the bed in the middle of the night (which is not allowed), but we let him stay as he trembled half the night.
Not a lot you can do -make sure he has a safe den -they like to be covered - even their heads, so they feel safe. Talk gently to them and stroke them, rather than leaving them alone.
For Bonfire night here we have got a slight sedative from the vet.
This is fairly common with mini schnauzers.
Good luck!
