Drinking and peeing a lot

by Michele
(Kansas City)

My 6 year old schnauzer who has never had an accident in the house has had 2 in the last 4 days. He is also drinking a lot more water than usual. What is going on?

NOTE FROM LINDA AND MAX: Hi Michele, we recommend you get your schnauzer checked out. Drinking excessive amounts of water can be a sign that there is a problem.
Had anybody else experienced with with their schnayzer?

Problem solved....I hope.

Thanks everyone for your comments! We went straight to the vet and had Gus checked out. All levels came out normal. The vet said he could have passed a kidney stone and that it also could be his diet. I have switched him to Stella & Chewys raw freeze dried and NOW dry food. He has not had one problem since and LOVES the food. It's expensive but he's worth every penny! Thanks again!!

NOTE FROM LINDA AND MAX:
Great news about Gus, we love a happy ending!

Peeing a lot....

Have you had your mini checked for diabetes? My sister is a nurse and her lab started drinking a lot and she said this is often a sign of diabetes. Best wishes.

Kidney Failure
by: Anonymous

Our beloved Max went downhill in less than a week with the same problem aged 13, it turned out to be kidney failure, something older Schnauzers often suffer from. Unless a vet is consulted very quickly it progresses extremely fast. Hope your Schnauzer recovers.

Drinking a lot.. and peeing
by: Michele

I'm Michele in the UK..
I did experience the same problem with Rebel 1 and it was his Kidneys that were failing, but with my boy he showed no sign until it was too late to rectify. Watch out for blood in his urine..... When they drink a lot their kidneys cannot cope with the excess water so they pee.. when the vet examines them , it's usually the protein level that is far too high and they nee to go on a Special Vet Diet, which is expensive and bland.. but if you want you dog to recover it pays to take the vet's advice.. otherwise the kidneys will deteriorate..

I agree with Linda and Max; please have your schnauzer examined by the vet. Excessive drinking of water could be a sign of diabetes.

Good luck. :-)
