Carson 11 year old Schnauzer panting and hassling

by Jenna
(Louisiana)

My 11 year old has been panting and hassling constantly without any prior exertion. He just lays on the couch and does this. He isn't hot or thirsty and I'm starting to get worried. He is a registered mini but is taller and heavier than they said he would be. Please help I'm so worried about him. He's my first baby (got him when I was 17.)

NOTE FROM LINDA AND MAX:
Hi Jenna, what do you mean by hassling?
It might be as wellll, if you can't explain the panting, to get him to the vet's to get his heart checked out.

CARSON..
by: Michele

Fantastic News Jenna.. and it's wonderful that Carson is so much better..and we were able to help you....Make sure that when Carson is prancing around that he doesn't hurt himself and get too ambitious.. keep up the medication and the prescription diet you bought from your vet for his Arthritis..
Maybe you can post a photo or two of him now he's better..

Carson
by: Jenna

I took Carson to the vet and found out he was in pain due to arthritis in his back and a weak kneecap. He was prescribed some anti-inflammatory type pain pills and is feeling so much better. He has stopped the panting and shaking. I have also put him on a diet as instructed by my vet. He is adjusting to that. Thank yall for your comments and help. Carson is prancing and hopping around again and I am so happy! :)

GREAT NEWS,
BEST WISHES FROM LINDA AND MAX

What I would do
by: Mary W.

I suggest that you take him to the vets and have him checked for Cushings disease. It affects the adrenal gland and can be treated with medication. Good luck!

To your vet to check his Heart..
by: Michele

Linda and Max are right.. it could be his heart as you say he is heavier than a normal schnauzer should be, so he is probably overweight which puts strain on his heart muscles making it difficult for him to breathe properly.. this is maybe why he is panting.
please take him to your vet as soon as his Surgery is open then if it is his heart your vet will check him out.. Carson might have to go on a diet and he might need medication.. Is he eating and what do you feed him..? being 11 he should be on Senior & Senior Light if he is overweight.. Keep us posted..
