9 week old schnauzer with very itchy eyes & green discharge

My 9 week old mini schnauzer is constantly itching his eyes with his front paws, has slight green discharge, and is starting to lose the hair around his eyes(which I'm assuming is from all the pawing at it) I wipe it with a warm wet cloth to clean it and hopefully give some relief, but obviously it is not fixing the problem. I heard it might be food allergies, but we're on a great food. Natural balance duck and potato. Does anyone have any suggestions or have experienced this before?
NOTE FROM LINDA AND MAX:
It would well be an allergy or a reaction, but we would get him to the vet as soon as possible to get it treated.
By the way, just becauae it is an expensive food does not mean that your puppy can't have a reaction to it, every dog is different.
With puppies it's important to get any problems treated ASAP.

Allergies
by: Michele

So glad Karla that it was only an allergy, but make sure his food does not contain anything that could cause more problems... eyes or skin.. Luckily I've never had this problem and I've had four Schnauzers.. two of which I have now.. Rebel, who is 5 years and Benji is 19 months.. he could have a Gluten and Wheat allergy.. as sometimes this causes itchiness.. my boys have the Nature-Diet which is Gluten and wheat free.. no additives or colouring at all just simple fresh Chicken, vegetables and brown rice... I mix the Burns Adult and Senior with it..

All clear
by: Kayla

Went to the vet today! It's allergies. Thanks for the concern and advice. It is greatly appreciated. My little man is very happy and on the healthy track (:

NOTE FROM LINDA AND MAX:
Great you know what it is -you might want to consider a hypoallergenic food and he may need medicated shampoos if he has allergies - they are not uncommon in Mini Schnauzers, Max has alergies, but lives perfectly well with them. See our section on Schnauzer skin conditions

Green discharge from eyes..
by: Michele

This could be serious and as Linda and Max say .. you MUST get your puppy to your vet immediately.. Eyes are the most important for a dog of any age, be it puppy or adult.. has your puppy got an Eye Certificate from your breeder, showing that your puppy's generation and his / her parents are CLEAR of the eye disease which schnauzers can get if their family have had it.. My dogs eyes were tested at 8 weeks of age and before I bought him from my breeder. I have the Certificates from the Opthalmic Vet... he may have even picked up a foreign body and rubbing his eyes are making it the matter worse, as his paws will probably not be completely clean.. BUT PLEASE GET HIM TO YOUR VET NOW..
