Type 1 diabetes in a 6 month old mini schnauzer

I have a 6 month old miniature schnauzer and he just got diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and was just wondering if there could be any other illness that would bring this on, he seemed find and then when he was 4 months old he stopped being playful and started drinking a lot of water and losing weight. When I took him in to the vet his blood sugar was in an excess of over 600 when 100 is normal, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions regarding this?
