standard schnauzer or giant?

HI
I have a mini schnauzer just now a black and silver male 2 years old he is a great wee dog!
We have decided now to get another schnauzer but want to go for the bigger size. My husband works in the Middle East so i am alone with my 3 kids most of the time. My youngest child is 9 years old.
I am wanting a dog to protect me and my family especially when I am out walking and in the house as we had a attempted break in 1 month ago, but I need a good allrounder, temperament is the most important as I have the kids.
Is the standard the best choice for me or the giant? We live in the countryside in Scotland thanks!
