Problem with skin on the ears

HI, Our Schnauzer has crusty, not really bumps, but places on his ears that will come and go away. They seem to irritate him.
I have tried to remove them myself and they will leave a bloody spot. He definitely does not like me touching them.
Have you heard of this problem?
