My Schnauzer's ears look like the tips are rotting off

We just inherited a miniature schnauzer. It is 8 at night and haven't been able to see a vet.
The bottom of his ears look extremely dry and discolored, almost like they are rotting.
We are so concerned because we have a Boston terrier and an 8 year old daughter who wants to hold him. We don't know if our other dog could possibly catch something from the schnauzer.
please help
